Our Mission

Saluting with Smoke exists to bring awareness to the ongoing veteran suicide and substance abuse issues and to provide a fundraising opportunity for Mission Zero Hundred Hours. Through hosting a KCBS Sanctioned Competitor Series contest with a Masters Series level prize purse we aim to bring awareness to vets and veterans organizations within the veteran community.  All profits from this event benefit Mission Zero Hundred Hours to directly assist at-risk vets through our BBQ Saves Lives program.

Veterans returning from service often find it difficult to integrate back into civilian life. Upon out processing, at the stroke of a pen Vets' lives change immediately. They lose your military family, unit, structure, schedule, job, and support network.

The assumption is that Vet's have a strong civilian family support structure in place to help the transition. This isn’t the case for many vets, and is usually much harder on combat vets.

Mission Zero Hundred Hours Flagship program -  BBQ Saves Lives - pairs vets with championship caliber Pro BBQ teams for BBQ excursions. The process of cooking competition BBQ is very mission centric. Over the course of a BBQ contest, vets get to re-connect with all the goals that make them who they are. Preparation. Task lists. Team. Mission Completion. Contributing. Selflessness. Family. Brother & Sisterhood. BBQ contests have a very clearly defined beginning and end, with success criteria and results. You have the adrenaline of competing, and completing tasks. At the end of a contest we hope Vets find a new family and support network within the BBQ community bigger and better that the military one they had!
